Stop and Frisk

One of the most controversial police procedures is the stop and frisk search that is currently happening in New York City. This type of limited search occurs when police confront a suspicious person in an effort to prevent a crime from taking place. The police frisk the person for weapons and question the person. As it was mentioned in the video, African-American males like him are most likely to be stopped and frisked. In my opinion, this practice is just purely unfair especially to innocent African-American males. Innocent civilians also have to suffer the consequences of actual criminals. Stereotypes rooted in the social culture have clouded people’s perception of African-Americans. For example, a Black male may be dress in baggy pants but it doesn't necessarily mean he is a criminal. The practice of stop and frisk definitely creates mistrust between officials and communities. African-American males are facing a number of problems today. Racism and discrimination are two of them. Racism and discrimination have been taking place everywhere around the world, and has not been completely taken away. We also have issues like these in Toronto. I know a lot of people who have experienced racism before. It is sad to think that racism is happening right here, right now, in front of your eyes in the schools, the media and in public. I believe racism is at its worst in some of our schools because students have either witnessed it, have been a victim of it or have been racist towards their peers. But I think we can prevent racism through properly educating the youth in our schools and not only that, but actually showing them how to properly treat people. Kids will generally mimic what they see, and if they see us treating everyone equally, this could prevent future racism.

  1. I agree! Racism and discrimination could be avoided if we were to treat others equally!
